THE INFANTE D. LUIZ
GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE
The
Geophysical Institute Infante D. Luiz (IGIDL), is an operational and research
centre attached to Lisbon University. It was initiated in 1853, within the
Polytechnic School, as the first Portuguese Meteorological Observatory.
Its headquarters are located at Rua Escola Politécnica, nº 58, 1250-102 Lisbon.
Located in the heart of the Lisbon Botanical Garden, IGIDL includes laboratories of
General Geophysics,
Seismology,
Meteorology, Climatology and
Solar Radiation. In particular IGIDL
keeps the oldest
Portuguese meteorological series.
IGIDL maintains a
Library and Documentation
Service where an important set of geosciences related scientific
magazines can be found.
IGIDL develops alone, or in cooperation with
other national or international entities, inquiries, studies and services in the
area of Geophysical Sciences. It keeps and updates geophysical series,
collaborates in the organization of courses at the pre and post graduate levels,
and other activities of research organized by the University of Lisbon.
THE
"SITE STUDY" OF THE CADIZ BAY OBSERVATORY WAS FINISHED
 Last
Friday, April 14 the seismic passive operation performed at the site where a
submarine observatory will be installed on November 2007 has ended.
A set of 5
OBS build at the Instituto Geofísico do Infante D. Luiz placed at depths
between 3200 and 3700 m, was used to monitor during 43 days the seismic
activity at the site chosen to build the observatory i.e. near the horseshoe
abyssal plain. This operation took place on the vessel D. Carlos I of the
Instituto Hidrográfico. This action taken under the sponsorship of the FCT
project TESS is also a contribution for the development of the design of a
new early warning system under the NEAREST project funded by the EU. See a
small movie about OBS operations at sea.
