5th Earth Systems Summer School

The 5th Earth Systems Summer School took place in Madeira Island from 8 to 14 July. The focus of the summer school was on the “interactions between large and small scales” encompassing different components of the Earth Systems (atmosphere, land, ocean and solid earth). Processes operating at time-scales from hours to millenia were explored including atmospheric convection, land-atmosphere exchanges, coastal interactions, plate boundary dynamics, island evolution and high-impact events.  One of the days of Summer School was integrated in an oceanographic research campaign, which meant the participants spent one day on board of the boat “D. Carlos I”.

The summer school had 25 participants: 12 from Lisbon University (IDL), 6 from University of Évora, 2 from Madeira University and 5 foreign student ( Romania, Switzerland, Netherlands, Senegal), 10 women and 15 man. The classes were given by 16 lecturers (8 Portugues (IDL, ,Évora, Madeira), Switzerland, France, Netherlands, and USA).(text by Emanuel Dutra)
